Done & Gone – 2nd July

The day has arrived to dig up the road. It has taken a long time to get here. We also have our Sparky on site finishing the wiring. I got a pretty certificate at the end. South Roads hasn’t finished their part but I don’t care. I am just glad I have my part in. We stayed around to make sure they connected the water and put the water Toby in. Literally their one job for the day and they didn’t bring the tool that means the water turns on. They promised me 2 days or so to do it. Rowan told them not good enough as our plumber is here tomorrow and needs the water on. So they needed up getting a worker who lives I. Palmerston to do it on his way to Ōamaru tomorrow morning. Our Skevingtons contractors were great, I just wished we could have used them for the full job. The digger driver even kindly moved our tree stump for us. Rowan wanted it away from the power line so we can set it alight one day.

We have Dave the plumber and Chris our digger man on site today. Dave is finishing off the plumbing and Chris is finishing off our landscaping. It took a few trucks off rocks to finish it off and moving some earth too. But it is much better. Dave had trouble with the toilet and realised he didn’t connect it properly, so he fixed it easily. But this is why you turn the water on as soon as possible to see if there is any issues.

Wednesday, today it is just Rowan and I. We are here finishing off jobs. The council inspector shows up around 10am to do the final inspection. Wahoo we pass with flying colours.

Carpet is here! It is a big push today. The carpet is going in and Rowan and I have a fair bit to do too. We also run off to Dunedin to go to Bunnings, The Warehouse and Recycle Boutique. I need a hair dryer if I want to get exterior paint dry today. It works a charm. After the carpet layers are gone I get into my touch up paint. Rowan and I collapse at 6.30pm and go home. What a day.

Friday and Saturday are a bit of a blur. We have a day in town running around on Friday and get back to Herbert around 2pm. Rowan and I get into a few jobs that need to be sorted. We also have a big list for tomorrow. Bette is going and the first job is to unpack her ready to go on the move. Sylvia and I follow Jim in her ute. The drive takes about an hour and a half. Rowan stays behind to level up Jo and to reconnect the water and cook dinner. We moved the truck forward and so it needed to be done asap. Rowan literally has bruises all over his abdomen from getting under the truck. Crazy!

Sunday, oh I forgot to mention in all the chaos we also sold the house. The new owners are getting early access today and starting to put furniture in. I cleaned like a mad woman and Rowan worked outside fixing up gates and cleaning up outside. I got a few photos done just as they arrived. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

The day is far from over. Rowan gets onto the roof of the containers and starts putting up the iron. It’s is getting pretty dark and the iron is wet with condensation when he finishes.

Alistair comes to help us get the last jobs done. We are very thankful for the help. it was about 3pm when we finally got the jobs done and could pack. We did it in the fastest way possible. Throwing things into bags and weighing them. There was no rhyme or reason. We got 5 out of the 6 bags done. Then we ran off to Ōamaru to go see Jerry and Margaret. Plus a few other last minute errands. Then dinner with Laura and Alistair. We got home beyond tired. At midnight I got to sleep. What a day.

Goodbye! We hit the road

We have two nights in Christchurch before flying. There is a few people we want to see before we go. It is pretty full on, but in a good way. I manage to send a bunch of messages before we go. However I still have a long list to get through while in Sydney. We also have a goodbye to Noodly, the new owner has picked her up.

I noticed the newly commissioned art installation in the bathroom, and was going to enquire about it, before remembering that one doesn’t need to fully understand art in order to appreciate its beauty.

Unnamed

We got an early uber to the airport, it feels really strange to have so much luggage.

I safely landed us into Sydney. The ride over was quite bumpy but after trying to go up, down, to the side and still finding turbulence I gave up and left the auto pilot on. AI is so good now, didn’t even need to land the plane. It really is a sit there and look pretty kind of job now. Thanks to Air New Zealand for trusting me to get us all to Sydney.

We were being cheeky and that cheekiness got me into the cockpit with the pilots. Got to love AirNZ ❤️

We made it through customs without a hitch. It may have been obvious that we are packing our life up to be on a boat with all the strange gear we brought with us.

Services – 21st June

What a week. I am exhausted! We have been fighting the whole week to get ducks to stay in their rows as much as humanly possible. It has been an epic push to get it all sorted.

It started on Monday when it was a very wet day, South Roads are on site to put in the manhole, we didn’t bother to go to site. Our first roadblock occurred when I checked my tradies are under control to find my plumber wasn’t. The drain layer we sorted at Laser Plumbing fell through. So we frantically called every one we knew to help us out. I ended up getting a couple of recommendations of the same guy. I called him up damsel in distress, he said he could meet me tomorrow morning on site.

Tuesday morning rolls in, we get to site and find some holes but no man holes yet.

We sold off all our fence posts that we haven’t used.

Wednesday, I had to beg Skevingtons to dig the trench for my electrical connection and drainage. I didn’t want to change my electrician from coming today as there are two guys lined up behind him to connect the power. We are trying our best to stop the domino effect. South Roads came for a sniff but hasn’t installed the manhole. Maybe tomorrow!

Big day, we have plumber, drainlayer and South Roads all working on site. Well the plumber and drain layer are working. Not sure about South Roads who turned up at 11am, then took another hour before any real movement. Then took until 4pm to actually lower in the man hole. I am glad we paid a fixed quote and not a time and materials cost. Drainlayer finished just after lunch and plumber finished at 3pm. Great to have some productive work done.

Friday, no work on site. Maybe South Roads showed up but I doubt it. We will have Skevingtons come first thing on Monday to cut across the road.

We went out on a charter boat from Moeraki to go fishing for Blue Cod. It was a lot of fun, Rowan and I got loads of fish and it was great seeing all the extra wildlife. The group overall caught (a lot we put back), Blue Cod, Red Cod, Sharks, Red Perch, Crimson something a rather, barracuda and tarakihi. We got one show off NZ fur seal. A lot of birds gulls and petrels. The best part was getting a few Southern Royal Albatross show up. They did not let the large petrels or smaller birds get anything haha.

After we had lunch at the local tavern and then went home to get out of our fishy clothes. We took the fish over to Jim & Silvija to enjoy. The fish was absolutely delicious.

Sunday was pretty chill, we got a few things done around Herbert.

Cleaning Up – 14th June

We had another go at getting our jobs done in Dunedin. Success! However it wasn’t an easy day off as we had hoped. It turned into a full on day of phone calls and running around.

We are getting there. A favour or two each way between us and our neighbours. Jim needed a bunch of wood chips for his garden so we picked up 5 huge bags. We managed four on the first load. Pretty cheap too at $350 for all of it.

We had a nice dinner with Laura, Alistair and the kids. It has been a while since we caught up and it was fun to load the kids up with sugar as we left.

Rowan is on a mission to install a bit of a roof over the container. I helped pass up tools between organising boxes of stuff for the container. Together we unloaded the spare trailer. We had a bunch of vintage stuff in there from the Swapmeet. A local guy was going to buy it all for his shop but times are tough at the moment and he is easing on buying. Not a problem for us as we have the storage space.

All of these left over Oregon planks are going up to Jim’s as he has a use for them. Thankful for use of the tractor as it makes the job a lot easier.

We had a nice lunch at the Fort Enfield Tavern before unloading the wood at Jim’s. I had a lot of alcoholic ginger beer, which I am not sure was a good idea. Not because I felt tipsy just a stomachs full of food and fizzy while unloading all that wood. But by the time we unloaded it all I was pretty sober. The boys continued drinking so we ended up putting Jim’s bike on the trailer and I took us all back to Herbert. The boys were all squished in haha.

Organising – 7th June

The past two weeks have been busy but also slow. I have managed to read about 5 books, too much time on my hands. It has been incredibly frustrating getting the services sorted and the date was set but then it changed. Hoping we are now locked in for 15th & 16th to get the job done. In the meantime we have been getting our belongings organised.

Chris stuffed his rotator cuff and it took a little longer than we wanted to finish off the pads for the containers.

Rowan dismantled the lean to next to the container and we brought the sorted all the tools that we stored beneath it.

Rowan and I have a bunch to do in Dunedin so we headed off to Palmerston first to drop off stuff. While we were there we went to Skevingtons to see when they can move our container to Herbert. They tried to lift it a couple of weeks ago and said it may be too heavy. We continued to Dunedin and didn’t get any of our jobs off the list. We had a late breakfast and dropped off some clothes to the recycle boutique and continued on to Rowan’s eye appointment.

This will sausage made it for the wrong week, so no eye appointment. Then when we were about to head to Bunnings I got a call to say they had got the container onto the truck and they were taking it up to Herbert. So we dropped what we were doing and started to head back. Officially didn’t tick anything off the list as I was supposed to go back to the recycle store.

Upside we got our containers into place with minimal damage. The one from Palmerston suffered a bit, but we closed it back up as a problem for another day.

Our wonderful builder Graham came to finish off jobs on Friday and we didn’t quite make it to the finish line on Friday so he came back on Saturday to complete it. We are so grateful as he is off to Vanuatu for a couple of weeks. It feels a bit strange to know we don’t need a builder now on site.

On Sunday we got Bette out of the field and onto the driveway where the container was. We sold Bette to our neighbour. We really only pre moved her as we are worried it’s going to get too wet to easily get her out.

Waiting – 24th May

We are doing our best to get along with other chores as we wait for the services to be connected. A fair amount of prodding all week gets us a result on Thursday with the council giving us a cost for the contributions and Southroads connection cost. We haven’t locked in yet as we are discussing with Skevingtons which part of Southroads is for us to pay and what part is for them. Hopefully it will be sorted on Monday.

We did a day in Palmerston with Alistair coming to help. When getting ready I couldn’t find the circular saw. Rowan and I hunted high and low with no luck. We must of left it in the house. Turns out we left it in the grass next to fence for the past month. Rowan shows me it covered in frost and it still works! Now that’s a power tool haha. I can’t believe no one took it.

The boys focused on the fence, Rowan sucked all the water mud out of the holes and Alistair filled them up with gravel and rammed them into place. I focused on painting the exterior window surrounds and then a bit of interior trim.

I practiced on my motorbike all week to prepare myself for a lesson and my full test on Friday. I did really well in the lesson I was relaxed and Trevor said he thinks I am ready for my test but of course if I make a major mistake he can’t pass me, so it’s not a guarantee but he thinks I should go ahead. I am nervous and like a complete different rider, they must take this into consideration as I did not perform great and I was sure I had failed. The test was in Timaru and in the industrial Washdyke area and he asked me to turn right. The traffic was crazy busy I went to go and hesitated but didn’t cross the white line. We were there for a while when I realised I can use the flush median doh! I was sure that was going to fail me. He also told me turn instructions a little too late for my liking which made me either slow too fast or too late haha. I also did 80 through a 100 zone for a long time because of one of these turns and I wasn’t sure what the speed limit was because I was so focused on making the turn correctly that I didn’t see a sign. However I managed to stay under the limit which means I won’t fail on that. He even took me down a 60 country road that should have been at least 80. Well I somehow passed which made me very surprised and happy haha. We didn’t book Rowan in as wanted to make sure if I needed to resit the test I can in a few weeks. Trevor had no one else booked after us so off they went and Rowan also passed. He thought he hadn’t too, because of a few things he did wrong that he wasn’t sure if it would make him fail. Here we are, both full licensed riders and drivers! Wahoo.

With no time to celebrate we jumped on our bikes and headed to Rolleston, Christchurch. Rowan kindly did his test on the Himalayan so we could drop it off afterwards. We had talked about me riding the Himalayan up to drop it off and we come back on Rowan’s yellow bike which is a lot more comfortable. But not being confident I would pass my test on the bigger bike Rowan said we should take my TU as I will be more confident and comfortable. We got that all done around 6pm and went on an uncomfortable two up all the way back to Ōamaru. We got a big stretch done without stopping and stopped in Timaru for dinner before getting back around 10pm. Exhausted and cold we both needed to warm up and chill out before bed.

In the weekend we attacked the lean to storage area off the container. Didn’t quite empty it but would like to have it all done soon so we are ready when it’s time to move the containers.

We did a trip up to Jim’s farm and came back with a load of wood for his sister in law Velta. We like efficiency. We got majority of jobs off our to do list this week. So it is time to make this week’s list and go achieve it!

Adventures North – 14th May

We had a lovely time in Picton catching up with James and Connor. Kate and baby Bowen were in England as her mother took a turn so she rushed over to be there for her.

The Queen Charlotte track is a beautiful walk (we only did a small part of it) when we stopped for a snack for Connor we ended up a piglet on our toes. It didn’t complain too much about being captured and luckily we didn’t get an angry muma coming at us. The poor wee fella must have lost his mum and while I think he is a pest he deserves a home at least until Christmas when he is big enough to be ham. Along our walk we offered him to all the local looking walkers. Back at the start/end of the track the caravan that sold ice creams was open we asked if they would take it or if they knew someone. They had taken in a piglet in the past but was about to go away for a month. They needed up calling a neighbour who happily agreed to take little pig. A very happy ending.

A very picturesque ferry crossing. I did eventually fall asleep and had a little nap.

Once in Wellington we caught up with Michaela and Gareth who we have missed the last few times.

In the afternoon we headed up to Shane & Lisa’s place in Whanganui. Rowan cooked dinner and we had a lovely catch up.

The following day we headed north to Reporoa to stay with my sister Sarah and her family. We took the scenic route around Mt Ruapehu. Rowan wanted to sit in the plane in Taupo as he hadn’t done that before.

Sarah & Keelan’s kids are growing fast and they’re about to move into Rotorua. They have purchased a house that needs a renovation. If they decide to vlog or blog about it I will be sure to let you know.

We stayed in Papamoa for 6 nights. My cousin and two of her kids joined us in the weekend. We had lots of swims in the surf and even spotted a very large Bronze Whaler. Rowan got the kids out after seeing it, not because he was worried, but he didn’t want to be responsible for a shark nibble. We also did some fishing and had some great walks at Maketu and Mt Maunganui.

Rowan and I have our gold and some silver with us to take to a refinery in Penrose. The melt it down for us and we can sell it to them or they can give it back to us in ingot form.

Rowan helped mum with a bit of a pickle with one of her properties so we had to go out and celebrate.

In Te Awamutu we caught us with my aunty and more cousins and lots of babies. It was great to see them all, they all grow up so fast!

We spent a night at my Dads place on Beachlands. A very nice catch up with him and Sue. Dad just had a big 70th birthday and this silly sausage forgot his gift in Christchurch. I will need to post it to him.

We have use of a car while up in Auckland. Paul is overseas for work and my sister Emma has lovingly let us use his car. She warned me it’s thirsty but we have been driving Camele, who is a lot more thirsty than his Volvo.

A warm welcoming in Whangaparāoa. My Nana went all out with a wonderful home cooked meal on our first night. It was absolutely delicious, we had mussel fritters and lovely crumbed fish.

On Saturday we said goodbye to our beloved Camele, she went off to her new home.

We also had a chance to catch up with Lynne, Rowans cousin and my friend Sarah and her family.

On Mother’s Day we took my sister Emma’s kid Ellery off her for a few hours so she could get some stuff done. We first met at Mitre10 for a coffee and a play date with my sister Clare and daughter Skylar. Clare suggested a tree tops walk in Northcote where you walk among the giant Kauri trees. We went in and out of the park so many times I think we must have washed our shoes about 16 times on our walk. The bird life was great and it is awesome having a forest in a city.

In the afternoon we went to Runamuck for a little shindig. It is great to see all the trees growing. Rowan and Ellery ended up hunting for all sorts of things in the bush.

We had a couple of nights at Emma’s house and my mum was up for Nana duties as Emma was away for work. We got an extra night with Nana on Tuesday night where we took her out for dinner and we had a great morning and lunch with her the next day.

Rowan and I are on Aunty & Uncle duty in Warkworth at Clare’s. She is also away for work so it is great to have a chance to help out as normally I am way too far away. We had Skylar on Wednesday night and dropped her off to school on Thursday morning before flying to Christchurch later on that day. I was very thankful for the use of Pauls (Emma’s partner) car. It made getting around very easy.

Heading North – 25th April

Monday, rained off from site. Was hoping to get a day out of our builders but it’s a bit filthy. We head into town instead and hit the jackpot of delicious Porcini mushrooms. So many of them Rowan made them into a soup.

On Tuesday we have the Sparkys here doing the internal fit out. They haven’t finished and will need another day to connect the power and finish off. Rowan and I helped where needed but mostly worked outside starting the rails on the fence.

Wednesday we had Graham on site, it was just a focus on getting the deck done. I was inside painting while the boys worked on the deck. They literally kept going until there was no power left in the battery powered tools

On Thursday we had a grand plans with Lance our carpet man. It wasn’t until we hit Moeraki I had a brain wave and realised he needs power in order to do the carpet. Also ideally a warm room as it makes the carpet stretching a lot easier. Boy it has been frosty! We end up cancelling but Rowan and I continue to site as we have a bit to do. We finish off the fences (as far as we can get). Clean up the site from all the loose wood and rubbish. Put a load on our trailer to take to Alistair. Make sure the container is tightly packed ready to be moved and then head home.

Once we got home we got to packing and getting ready to head off. Tomorrow we start heading to the North Island to drop Camele off.

We have dinner with Laura, Alistair and the kids and get home exhausted.

Heading North, first stop is in Timaru. We help Jo out at the hospice for a few hours before continuing to Ashburton then Christchurch. We are staying with Rick and Liz. I finally remember that I have a plastering job to do there. I promised a long time ago I would fix up some GIB near the heatpump that was needed to replace their old model. I remembered my tools and got 90% done before we left on Saturday.

We left Christchurch around 2pm and headed to Picton. The drive was really lovely and the sunset around Kaikōura made it more special.

Kitchen Woes – 19th April

It’s time to do Mondays job. We have the wonderful Chris here to start the landscaping for Brough. We are not going too nuts as a lot of it will be ripped up with the connection to services. But this gives us a bit of a start. We are creating a parking area at the front along with some form of rock garden around the decking area. I have purchased a bunch of natives that will grow up to make a great area. We also got him to auger out post holes for us so we can put a fence around our corner block.

Plumbing day, Dave is here to make a good start on our plumbing. We have another day and a half of work to do. But this is all we will do for now as we do need to connect up. I painted the first coat into the trim and doors. Rowan pulled down the lean to at the container. We are taking this container to Herbert.

In other news we have sold our beloved Camele, I am going to be quite sad to see her go. We have been asked to deliver her to Manly, Whangaparāoa, talk about a small world.

Our kitchen saga continues… still waiting on the missing panel. We came into M10 to pick up the benchtop to find it has been damaged. Argh so now that needs to be remade.

We are on a mission to get tidied up and organised. The resource recovery field is getting a good clean up. We took three loads to the Hampden tip most to be utilised but some of it was just scrap metal which they will make money on. Rowan has been working on the fences at Palmerston. Maybe someone would want to put a horse or something in it.

Continued – 13th April

I did a TBC because oh trip was a bit interrupted. Which really sucked so I thought I would seperate it so I am not being a downer on the birthday post.

At the start of our scavenger hunt we got a phone call from the builder saying he is on site. What is he doing today. I told him he isn’t supposed to be there as the kitchen doesn’t arrive until the following day. So I rang the boss and told him he has gotten his days mixed up and we said definitely not this Tuesday/Wednesday, come Thursday/Friday. That in itself was annoying.

Next on Rowan’s list was an op shop challenge but before we started that we thought we better get one last Ferg. While we were eating we get the next phone call this time from Mitre10. We can’t deliver your kitchen the truck Hiab has broken. We push back and ask them to find a different solution. They kept putting it back on us, incredibly frustrated we decide we need to get back to pick up a bloody kitchen for tomorrow.

We kind of do the challenge and go op shopping in Queenstown before leaving.

We kind of part do the challenge but it’s not an exactly what I had planned. We ended up getting our bottoms back to Ōamaru to get our trailer and pick up the kitchen.

One of the most frustrating parts was the kitchen was loaded on the truck last Wednesday ready to go Tim just didn’t want to unload it into the house on his own. Which I realise now how insane that is as I can lift each cabinet. We offered our sack barrow to make life easy. He said next week and we said he would have the same issue as we are not around.

A grumpy Rowan (understandably) comes for the kitchen at Mitre10 the kitchen designer puts it onto our trailer on his own. He is not Mr Strong. We take it home and plan to finish Rowan’s birthday hunt another day.

Thursday kitchen day! The benchtop isn’t here yet (don’t get me started!) but we get in as much of the cabinets we can. The upper cupboards are incorrect and they are supposed to be a bit longer so they done need handles. These ones are going to need handles. The muppets at Peter Hay have put these little plastic protectors on the wrong side of the upper cupboard which now means they need to be removed and I now have holes in it. Plus I have an entire filler panel missing. I swear I can’t make this shit up.

On Friday Graham got the trim in the house complete and sealed around all the exterior windows. Then we made a start on the deck! The wind took an empty concrete bag into the creek. Man this creek likes to give us a challenge haha

On Saturday I had planned to continue the hunt but we ended up going up to Jim’s farm and picked up the yellow bike. We went home over Myers Pass which was incredibly beautiful. The Cave is on a neighbouring farm.

Monday, we are ready for a day on site with Chris and his digger. Rowan and I head off and we wanted a couple of cops zoom past with their lights on. Before we got to the top of the Hill at Hampden we were stopped. The cop told us a big accident at least an hour delay. So we turn around and head home. I call Chris to let him know. So I get the fire warm again and we read our books. Chris goes past so we think maybe he knows something we don’t. NZTA website still says the road is closed. We meet him up at the local garage and there we find the latest information when we flag down a car. Lucky for us this car was at the front of the queue and waited for the last hour. It’s going to be at least 5 hours and the only detour is to drive out to Oamarama, Cromwell, then back in land on the Pigroot. Quite the detour! Apparently a logging truck lost its back trailer, not sure if it broke or unhitched. With incredibly bad timing as it took out a main freight truck and the firefighters spent an hour cutting him out before the helicopter took him to Dunedin. So there are logs and two very big trucks to remove plus an investigation. Monday will now become Tuesday.

So what’s a girl to do! Well let’s finish this hunt once and for all. Rowan’s op shop challenge was to dress up his outfit. He did that and got his bonus prize. A poetry book. We also did the nature bingo in Ōamaru Gardens and he did a few side quests too like climb a tree.

Birthday Celebrations – 7th April

Rowan turns the big four oh which is a great excuse to get away. I organised a few days away.

Sunday morning we head off onto the Pigroot. We turn inland at Kyeburn to go an attempt that 4wd track we tried to do in Camele a while ago. It was an easy track and we didn’t even need to put her in 4wd. The scenery was incredible. Not a surprise but some of the area was filmed in LOTR for Rohan. Poolburn Dam was bigger than I thought it would be and there were a lot of bach/cribs along the water. I planned to picnic at the dam but Rowan and I were not hungry so we carried on.

When we nearly hit Alexandra we stopped at Chatto Creek Tavern. A place we have gone past several times and it always appears to be busy so we thought we should try it. The food was really good and I can see why it is a popular place. Great outside area perfect for families and it’s right on the Otago Rail Trail.

We took a quick dunk into Lake Dunstan before continuing on to our Airbnb. It is right next to Lake Hayes.

Tonight we are having a fancy degustation meal at Amisfield Winery. There are 21 different things to eat and I think there were 16 wines. I was going to go dry and be the designated driver until I discovered we are 750m away so we walked. It is the most I have ever spent on one meal but it was more than a meal it was a full experience.

It was close to four hours we were there. Our Sommelier Remmy gave us wine from the $300 more expensive list. I think he just enjoyed our enthusiasm and he took quite a shine to the birthday boy. They were very discreet when wishing Rowan a happy birthday which he was very happy about. He has trauma from being sung birthdays at restaurants as a kid haha.

Every item was incredibly done, some I loved some I could easily leave. The details in every dish you could tell that there was hours upon hours put into each dish. Some people have found the experience quite macabre, we didn’t but I can see how it could be confronting if you never think about what animal gives you your food. There was a huge king crab which we assumed would be from Alaska but was surprised it is off NZ in the deep water.

Ivan the venison steak man was impressed that we knew that the knives he uses to serve his meal are Peter Lorimer knives. He said in the 2 years he has been there we are the first to know and notice. We told him that we have had Peter make us a knife handle before. Ivan was lots of fun I wanted to stay outside and keep chatting to him.

Happy birthday Rowan!

Off to the lake for a morning swim and we warmed up in the hot tub. Feeling a bit hungry and I was feeling a bit hungover we headed to Arrowtown to get a Ferg. There is a Fergburger there and they have a small menu to choose from. I felt much better after food.

I booked a wine tour with Joe who combines the Maori culture and history into his tours. It was just the three of us and we had a great time. Three different wineries, first one was Mora, second Mt Rosa, third was Monte Cristo. I really didn’t need more wine but hair of the dog and all that. At each winery we got a bottle to take with us. Each one was something that tasted like you couldn’t get it from a supermarket.

To book a tour with Joe in Wānaka or Queenstown find him on Google “Wanahaka”

After that we headed into Frankton to a studio that does saunas and ice baths as well as these Float tanks. You shower first then hop into these cocoon pod pools. They are not very deep, they have 500kg of epsom salts dissolved into them. It’s like a sensory depravation tank. It was an hour and I absolutely loved it, the time went so fast and my brain was so quiet. Rowan did not enjoy it but he also said it went fast so he must have chilled out a little. He always wanted to try it and is glad he has. I would go once a week, haha.

The wine mixed with a warm bath for an hour with not any fresh air probably wasn’t the smartest move. Oh well done it now, we grabbed some supplies from the supermarket and went back to the airbnb. I went to sleep, I drank a load of water and I just needed to sleep off that float tank and all that wine.

Tonight we are having a one thousand percent difference in cost with our dinner. Our two noodle bowls cost the grand sum of $2.

The birthday fun continues with a scavenger hunt. Today I planned a full day of hunting. The first clue lead us to Arrowtown where Rowan had to find me 10 leaves. Explore the Chinese settlement and have a delicious breakfast at Kahwah.

I had to skip ahead a few clues as it took longer than I expected. I had planned lots of side quests to fill in time but didn’t really plan for needing more time. Not to worry, we can fill those ones in later. I wanted to do skydiving but weight restrictions I wasn’t sure if Rowan would be light enough. Instead I thought why not a 4wd buggy thing. I have never been on one and Rowan hasn’t either. We are on the same mountain as the gondola but further around towards the Shotover River. Rowan was the driver I was the co driver. Sam the instructor/guide stayed at the very front. We had a driving Miss Daisy in the front, and English guy with his son in the middle and us at the end. In order to have a bit of we just hung back a bit and let them all get ahead of us so we could then take it a bit faster.

At the end Sam took us all three at a time for a quick spin. Man it’s like chalk and cheese he could make that thing fly. He was so quick. It was a neat experience

Next clue on the list was lunch and of course I had to get Rowan’s favourite Fergburger.

After Fergburger we went to Patagonia Ice cream shop. Great ice cream! 10/10.

Next on the list is an hour and a half deep tissue massage at Pirom. It was in the same room and man they did a good job at getting in there.

At this point I gave Rowan the option of continuing the hunt or to go back to the Airbnb and relax for the rest of the night. He chose to go back to the Airbnb.

TBC…
